In Chromatography, viewers learn a valuable technique for the rapid separation of chemical mixtures. After the scientific principles of paper chromatography are conveyed through real-life demonstrations and clear graphics, students move into the lab to analyze a number of ink samples, calculating Rf values for the pigments found in each sample. Students investigate the experimental techniques used to determine if two samples are identical by creating a unique visual "fingerprint" of each tested substance. They also explore the factors affecting each separation and extend the investigation by choosing different solvents for the mobile phase. See how gas chromatography is used in arson investigations and how thin-layer chromatography can be utilized to confirm a document's authenticity. Part of the multivolume Science Lab Investigations! DVD Series. Includes a Teacher's Guide.

Students will enjoy connecting batteries, wires and bulbs in various combinations to try to make bulbs light. Snap-on wire clips enable students to make connections between the batteries and bulbs quickly. A chart of various arrangements for connecting the batteries and bulbs is provided. The student studies the chart, predicts which arrangement will light the bulb and which will not, then connects the real batteries and bulbs (following the diagrams) to prove or disprove original predictions. Purchase size "D" batteries separately.
In Circulatory & Respiratory Systems, kids will discover how these two vital systems work together to help keep us alive through a process called cellular respiration. A close-up look at the components of our blood -- plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets -- reveals just how critical blood is to our survival. Pumped by the heart through a vast network of vessels, our blood is the ultimate pick-up and delivery system, providing vital nutrients, carrying away harmful waste and fighting against disease and infection. A visit to a hospital blood laboratory is included, as well as an interview with a doctor and a fun, hands-on activity in which students can test their lung capacity. Introduce your students to the Five Kingdoms through the process of classification. Students view illustrations of various life forms and use a simple, dichotomous key to determine the appropriate kingdom and phylum of each. In the process, they'll gather valuable summary information regarding what each life form "does for a living!" Grades 6-12.

Cobalt chloride crystals are commonly used in classrooms for chemistry experiments and demonstrations, primarily to study chemical properties and investigate reactions involving moisture and hydration. The most notable uses include:
-
Indicator for Humidity and Hydration: Cobalt chloride is a popular indicator for moisture because it changes color based on its hydration state. In its anhydrous form, cobalt chloride is blue, and it turns pink when it absorbs water. This property makes it ideal for demonstrating reversible chemical changes and teaching about hydration and dehydration reactions.
-
Le Chatelier’s Principle Demonstrations: Cobalt chloride can be used to illustrate Le Chatelier's Principle. By adding water or applying heat to the crystal, students can observe the reversible color change, demonstrating shifts in equilibrium due to changes in temperature or the presence of a reactant.
-
Testing for Water Presence: Cobalt chloride paper, which is made using the crystals, is used in chemistry and environmental science labs to detect water vapor in various gases or liquids.
Due to its potential toxicity and the fact that it can cause skin irritation, cobalt chloride should be handled with proper safety measures, including wearing gloves and protective eyewear.
Specifically designed to dramatically and vividly show the classroom a pollutant in water, this kit is designed to permit students the opportunity of determining the presence of animal waste by seeing a dramatic color change that occurs in a lactose broth, students can determine if E coli are present. Grades 7-12.
