An investigative study into the chemical nature of commercial shampoos. The student can perform the following experiments: pH determination; solid content determination; determination of flash foam formation; determination of foam retention time; determination of relative viscosity; India Ink dispersion test and determination of cost per 5 ml of shampoo. Each kit provides materials for 12 pairs of students. Grades 8-12.
This kit is a unique teaching tool for introducing your students to the chemistry behind plant pigments (the blueberry biopigment cyanidan) and how they can be used as pH indicators and fabric dyes. They use their knowledge to create their own pH test strips and evaluate them against a commercial type. Includes materials for four detailed activities featuring "model" and "inquiry" investigation paths – a total of 11 investigational activities, which can accommodate up to 40 students! Also contains a DVD with PDF Teacher and Student Guides and other digital content (see below). Covered concepts include: data analysis, accuracy vs. precision, biopigment structure, pH, pH scale, pH indicators, stains and dyes, acids, bases, acid-base interactions, solutions, and self ionization of water. STEM based curriculum kits accent the scientific method and independent inquiry featuring hands-on learning materials and exciting interactive digital content that can be accessed on a computer, tablet or your mobile device. Kits contain structured, guided, and open investigations, at introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels, to make inquiry based learning affordable and fun. Requires additional household materials for independent investigations. Student activity PDFs have a special Typewriter functionality allowing them to take notes, record experimental data, and answer analysis questions. They simply e-mail their worksheets back to you!

It’s time to start mixing things up! In this pretend STEM scenario, you are a chemist for a bath and body products company and it’s your job to make and test different cosmetic products. Use the tools in your laboratory to employ different scientific techniques and essential chemistry principles to make soaps and bath bombs. Try out different additives to affect the color, smell, and other qualities of the products you make.
Real science and pretend play come together in this activity-filled kit that can be used alone or as an extension of the Ooze Labs Chemistry Station (a Parents’ Choice Silver Honor winner!). As you mold different glycerin soap shapes, you learn about the chemical properties of soap that help it pick up and wash away dirt. While you’re concocting bath bombs, you learn about how acids and bases combine to form fizzing reactions, and what a pH level is. Expand your cosmetics knowledge with an overview of the biology of skin care and other science related to soap and bath products. All materials and chemicals are non-toxic.
