Fossils are historic blueprints -- remnants of plant and animal life that preceded us. In Fossils, students will examine molds, casts and imprints of various living things, and discover how scientists place the age of these ancient remains and the methods they use to preserve them for future generations. Find out how paleontologists discover fossils and what these discoveries tell us about the past. Take a trip to the Petrified Forest, and examine tree trunks that were turned to stone millions of years ago. A fun, hands-on investigation demonstrates for students how they can create four different simulated environments in order to test each for its ability to preserve remains. Part of the Earth Science in Action DVD Series. A Teacher's Guide is included and available online. 23 minutes. Grades 5 to 8.
Fossil fuels were formed millions of years ago as part of a natural process in which the remains of dead plants and animals were buried and placed under extreme pressure and heat. Coal, oil and natural gas are the most important fossil fuels. But what are they used for, how do we find them and what can we do to preserve our limited supplies? Students will find the answers to these questions and more in Fossil Fuels as they explore these nonrenewable resources of Earth. A fun, hands-on investigation demonstrates a creative alternative to using fossil fuels in the creation of plastic and a visit to an oil platform showcases how this valuable fossil fuel is pumped up from the bottom of the ocean. Part of the Earth Science in Action DVD Series. A Teacher's Guide is included and available online. 23 minutes. Grades 5 to 8.
Minerals are an important part of everything around us -- from the pencils we write with to the airplanes in the sky. Even the earth beneath our feet is packed solid with these essential building blocks. In All About Rocks and Minerals, children will discover the characteristics of minerals and see how different minerals make up different kinds of rocks: igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. A visit to a lapidary shop examines some beautiful gemstones, while a fun, hands-on investigation demonstrates how solid crystals can be made from a liquid. Part of the Earth Science for Children DVD Series. A teacher's guide is available online. 23 minutes. Grades K to 4.
This chart has illustrations and actual specimens for students to consult as they identify unlabeled rock specimens. For grades 6-12. 23 1/2" x 15 1/5".
For use with 14236 Sedimentary Rock Classroom Project. This activity explains the three main classifications of sedimentary rock: clastic, chemical, and organic. The importance of the origin is emphasized, and the relationship of particle size is demonstrated and explained. Grades 7-12.
For use with 12046 What Rock Is It? classroom project.
In this step-by-step classroom project students examine and identify individual rock specimens. As each rock specimen is examined and identified, students progress toward the completion of their own rock reference charts. The Teacher's reference chart uses illustrations and actual specimens for students to consult as they identify unlabeled rock specimens. For grades 6-12.
For use with Fossil Chart 16785.
This completely revised multi-color chart depicts the entire geologic time scale with most current geologic dating information. Representative fossils from the corresponding geologic periods are mounted on the chart. New larger chart size, 18" x 24" and comes with a wood frame. Grades 6-12. Ages 11-18.
Nothing says classic more than the Atlantis 12" blue ocean raised relief desktop world globe. There truly is no representation of the Earth that is more beautiful and dynamically accurate! Features true to life mapping with coloring that illustrates the mountains, deserts, forests and grasslands. Brightly colored blue oceans show undersea physical features. 17" tall with a bronze finished metal base and matching full swing, numbered Gyro-matic meridian, allowing you the most unobstructed view of the world.

The Edinburgh II 16" Blue Ocean Raised Relief Floor Standing World Globe sports clean, sophisticated lines, a gyro-matic full swing meridian which allows you to fully view the soft blue oceans and brightly colored landmasses. Comes with additional hardware that will allow you to change it from a floor standing globe, to a desktop globe! Standing a total of 38" tall, this beautiful world globe boasts a rich walnut finished pedestal and matching base. The sphere features both political boundaries and raised relief, providing the mapping details you have been looking for in a world globe at the price you want.
This 24" inflatable writable globe has a white background with outlined countries. The ball may be used over and over again with a wet erase marker (not included) to test your students geography skills.
This accurate relief model features a view of the earth?s interior and atmosphere in the same scale. The 12-inch diameter plastic globe, mounted in a cradle base, crust, mantle, and inner and outer cores. Used as a relief globe, this White model can be used for many classroom activities. The removable disk also portrays the atmosphere, temp, air densities, distance and problems of space travel. Size 14" x 14".
Used to simulate effect of earth's rotation on winds, ocean currents or unattached objects such as rockets. As sphere is launched across surface of base, when it is static, sphere traces a straight line. As turntable is put in motion, centrifugal force launches the sphere which, though traveling in a straight line, leaves a curved trace on rotating surface. Size of curve is in direct ratio to speed of rotation. Each kit includes one 14" diam. base (with outer retaining trough) mounted on a turntable, and featuring a reusable "magic slate" type erasable trace recording surface, removable launcher, 5/8" diameter steel spheres.
Teaches basic map reading: how to determine location, elevation and understand scales and symbols. Each package includes a plastic terrain model with 5 corresponding stacking contour sheets, 5 unprinted stacking contour sheets for projects, a wall map of the relief model with 50 student project maps, and a grease pencil. All plastics may be marked and erased. Study Guide.
Series of eight plastic raised relief models. Relates typical surface formations to subsurface structures that are shown as graphic cross sections on each model. Helps students to better understand the development of the landscape and the factor and force influencing the development. Geologic features are numbered and keyed to a comprehensive study guide. When combined, the 8 individual models form a continuous 8-foot long graphic landscape and landform reference. Each model is 12" x 15", printed in full color on durable plastic, thermo-formed and reinforced with rigid foam.
Watch how solids settle in layers at the bottom of a tank. Includes: Acrylics tank, slope, open tube, plastic drain tube and sprinkler head for plastic bottle. Dimensions: Tank - 11.8" x 2.8" x 5.9", Slope - 11.2" x 2.5" x 0.79", Open tube - 13" x 2.5" x 3.1", Plastic drain tube - 3.9"
Investigate the rock cycle. What is a rock? What is the rock cycle? How do rocks form? How are they classified? Your students will answer these essential questions as they conduct a series of hands-on activities. Using the set of rock specimens included, they will observe the distinct characteristics of each type of rock and explore the igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic processes of rock formation. Your students will Understand the processes that form igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Identify rocks by their physical characteristics. Classify igneous rocks as extrusive or intrusive. Classify sedimentary rocks as clastic, organic or chemical. Classify metamorphic rocks as foliated or nonfoliated. Model the effects of metamorphism on rocks. Relate different types of rocks to the processes of the rock cycle. Class Size: 40 Students. Grades: 7-10.
Introduce your students to the world of minerals. Provide your class with a hands-on lesson in the formation and characteristics of minerals. Using the set of specimens provided, the students observe the distinct characteristics of minerals and perform a variety of tests to classify them with respect to hardness, streaking, color, luster, specific gravity and reaction to acids. They'll also grow their own microcrystals to understand how crystals form beneath the earth's surface and what environmental conditions are required. Your students will identify minerals based upon their physical properties. Determine the hardness of common minerals using Mohs scale of hardness. Examine the crystalline structure of minerals. Calculate the specific gravity of mineral samples. Predict the reaction of specific minerals to hydrochloric acid. Investigate how crystals form from liquids. Class Size: 40 Students. Grades: 7-10.
